    Your senior years shouldn’t be treated as a handicap. Look at it as a new chapter with plenty of opportunities for exploring the world and trying out new things you weren’t used to. Doing all this would mean being in the best possible condition, so it pays to know how you can make yourself emotionally and physically ready for the years ahead. Whether you’re about to retire or entering the fifth year of your rest, here are some tips on how you can be kinder to yourself.

    1. Know Your Priorities

    To begin with, it’s important to define the goal you want to accomplish at the start of your retirement. You may have already established your estate plan and chosen a burial or cremation service earlier, but set aside time for personal projects that you can realistically complete within the next five years or more. This might include investing in an apartment or traveling to exotic places. 

    Whichever the case, you need to come up with a final list of activities and determine how much money you need and how complicated it would be to complete each one, considering your age. If traveling the world is at the top of your list, then you may have to invest a great deal of time conditioning your body for the adventures you will be embarking on. 

    2. Commit to a Workout Plan

    Accomplishing every item in your list requires a great deal of energy and vitality, so you will need to keep yourself in the best physical condition. It begins with adopting a personal wellness program that includes cardio and strength training exercises meant to improve your stamina and allow you to do more with less effort. 

    Aside from adding jogging and swimming to the mix, your daily routine should also include stretches and stationary exercises that can help combat arthritis and boost your body’s immune responses. Still, you will need to seek expert advice from a licensed fitness coach and come up with a workout program that suits your lifestyle, age, and goals. 

    3. Watch What You Eat

    For the most part, your workout plan is only as good as your diet plan. If you can’t consume the right foods that could help fight aging and improve your stamina, then you might as well be wasting time at the gym or your home fitness studio. 

    Your meals should be rich in nutrients that could inhibit cell oxidation, such as selenium and zinc, which are often found in most seafood. It’s also important to make sure you have your fill of fiber and protein, which are just as essential as you advance in age. 

    4. Make Time for Self-Learning

    Just as your muscles begin to atrophy due to idleness, your mind becomes less sharp when it’s deprived of activity. As you age, good memory and optimal critical-thinking skills become more essential in dealing with complex problems and making good decisions. 

    One way you can exercise your mind is through lifelong learning. Even at your age, it still matters to acquire new skills and, more importantly. Socialize with more people. These will give your brain the workout it needs to prevent the onset of dementia and slow down cognitive deterioration.
